The Holy Spirit, promises and new birth!

One of the benefits of a Bible reading plans that draws from different sections each day is that there are times when you are struck with similarities between passages.  Today is one of those days. Yesterday, in Luke 1 we read, “And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”  And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.” (Luke 1:34-35 ESV) In Matthew 1 we read that Mary was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. In Matthew 2 and Luke 2, we read of the birth of Jesus!

The second chapter of Acts contains the fulfillment of a similar promise.

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4 ESV)

The Holy Spirit came and the church, the mystical body of CHRIST was born!
