Deuteronomy 5:24 ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. ‘
God shows Himself! God loves to show His glory. Everything He does has this designed purposed. How can we, fallen sinful people SEE Him? We are usually so stuck on ourselves and our self-sufficiency that we don’t SEE Him. In order to SEE God, our pride has to be knocked out of the way. God often brings troubles and trial into out lives so that we realize our own weakness and foolishness. In such times, we call out to God (as we have seen in reading through the Psalms this year) and as God steps in to rescue us, to deliver us, to save us….we SEE Him, in all His glory and greatness and majesty! Those whose lives are going along smoothly, may see little of the glory of God, for they are full already with themselves, feel no need to empty themselves, and there is no room for God.
They who navigate little streams and shallow creeks, know but little of the God of tempests; but they who “do business in great waters,” these see his “wonders in the deep.” Among the huge Atlantic-waves of bereavement, poverty, temptation, and reproach, we learn the power of Jehovah, because we feel the littleness of man. Thank God, then, if you have been led by a rough road: it is this which has given you your experience of God’s greatness and lovingkindness. Your troubles have enriched you with a wealth of knowledge to be gained by no other means: your trials have been the cleft of the rock in which Jehovah has set you, as he did his servant Moses, that you might behold his glory as it passed by. Praise God that you have not been left to the darkness and ignorance which continued prosperity might have involved, but that in the great fight of affliction, you have been capacitated for the outshinings of his glory in his wonderful dealings with you.

What an excellent reminder! I love that passage from Charles Spurgeon. It makes me wonder what our world would look like if Christians didn’t pray for the “easy” way, but prayed and walked through and did those hard things, so that God could show off a little more in the lives of his kids.
