On the day that the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony. And at evening it was over the tabernacle like the appearance of fire until morning. So it was always: the cloud covered it by day and the appearance of fire by night.
—Numbers 9:15
This was more than proof of God’s presence with the people…the cloud by day and the fire by night helped and comforted the people of Israel. Imagine how comforting the fire at night was in the midst of a dark, scary wilderness, and the cloud by day would provide shade from the hot wilderness sun.
God is OUR shade, our refuge, our comfort, our keeper, our ever-present help in times of trouble.
For You have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat (Isaiah 25:4)
The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day (Psalm 121:5).
