Pastor Sam Crabtree of The North Church, Mounds View, MN preached a sermon on Genesis 13-14 9part of our reading plan today), “God Most High Possessor of Heaven and Earth.” Here is from his conclusion:
While Abram’s faith in God is growing, so is his character. That’s how it works.
Observe several Christ-like character qualities in Abram. He is content with what God has provided. Abram exhibits a sense of justice; He deals even-handedly in the public square. He is decisive in mobilizing his troops, and takes initiative to right a wrong. He shows love and kindness for his nephew by seeking and securing his freedom from captivity. He demonstrates humility in his awareness that he has already lifted his hand to the Lord in promise (14:22-23), and that the all-seeing eyes of the auditing Lord will know whether Abram keeps his word or not. He shows faithfulness and integrity, keeping his word to the Lord. No one is more content, just, decisive, loving, kind, humble, or faithful than Jesus, and when Abram displays these qualities he is reflecting Christlikeness. (Abram is still childless, so we stay tuned.)
Consider one more thought about Melchizedek: namely, he passes from the scene. He dies. He is no longer a king, nor a priest. Hebrews 7:23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, Jesus is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
You and I need someone who is both king and priest.
King – a righteous authority able to make righteous things stick
Priest – to represent us unrighteous sinners to such a righteous authority
If Jesus is just a king – a righteous king – then we are left to live in terror.
But he is also a priest – without sin! – who lives and intercedes.
What has Jesus been doing ever since his resurrection and ascension? Answer: interceding for you!
What is he doing right now? Appealing to the Father on your behalf!
Who is God?
God Most High, Possessor of Heaven and Earth
If that’s who he is, what should we do?
1. Offer our lives to him in totality.
2. Off our praise and thanks to him. We’ll have an opportunity to sing now. Throw your heart into it.
