Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself,
for emptiness will be his payment.

and his branch will not be green.
He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine,
and cast off his blossom like the olive tree.
For the company of the godless is barren,
and fire consumes the tents of bribery.
They conceive trouble and give birth to evil,
and their womb prepares deceit.”
Job 15:31-35 part of our reading plan today.
Job has endured the loss of his children, and so much more. Now we hear more from his “friends,” who “comfort” him with condemnation instead of compassion. We have the “inside scoop” and know how God allowed Satan to take away from Job, presuming that Job would curse God.
This section should make us stop and think about our attitude towards others who are suffering. Do we come with an air of superiority and judgment? Or do we come with a spirit of humility, even when correction and rebuke is necessary?
