The new residents of Jerusalem

In Nehemiah 11, we see the continuing plan to repopulate the city of Jerusalem. In verse 2, “And the people blessed all the men who willingly offered to live in Jerusalem.

We have been reading in Nehemiah how the city of Jerusalem and its walls were being rebuilt, and how the people were turning back to God and renewing their covenant with Him.  Today, we read how the people decided WHO would live in the city, and who would remain in the outlying villages.  Jerusalem was not an ordinary city. It was a holy city. God had told the people in Nehemiah 1:9. “I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’” This city was built and rebuilt on God’s promises. Hebrews 11 tells us, “For he [Abraham] was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.”
