So many words …

When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable,

but he who restrains his lips is wise. —Proverbs 10:19, in our Bible reading plan today.

The NKJV translates this verse: “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking” Due to our fallen natures, if we speak a lot, we are going to sin.  Therefore the second half of this verse makes complete sense: “but he who restrains his lips is wise.” If we want to please the Lord and not offend others, we will watch what we say. The more words we use, the higher the probability that we will “transgress.” It follows then that much talk leads to sin, so less talk eliminates the opportunity for sin.

This is a clear warning not to talk too much or we are going to sin. We are foolish to think we are immune. We should aim to be known for our reserve when it comes to talking.
