Was Jesus Funny?

In the passage for today, Luke 6:37-42, we read Jesus’ statements on judging others, including

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?  How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Here is Mark Driscoll speaking about humor in the Bible, and he comments on verses 41 & 42 (the log and the speck…the plank and the toothpick) starting at about 7:30 in the video.

  1. How about when Jesus is confronted by the pharisies for healing people and the forgivness of sin…perplexed, He turns to them and says,

    “Which is easier for you?”

Of course they can do neither and Jesus knows it. If you think about that one for a moment, Jesus is patronizing them in what seems like a rather humerous way!
