A Wedding Blessing

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.  For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?  And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Three_StrandsEcclesiastes 4: 9-12 has been a favorite for weddings.  28 years ago, I wrote these lyrics and my sister composed the music and sang it at our wedding.

As these two enter into one

may they know that strengthened and bonded in Thee

They become one far greater than two could ever be.

For with God as the CENTER of their life and love

They are one cord of three strands,

A cord which is not broken easily.

They are one cord of three strands.

Hand in hand they’ll walk life’s path together

With faith as their light

And God as their guide.

Help them, Oh Lord, to become

What You want them to be

Empowered by Your Holy Spirit.

Where there is darkness

May they be the rays of Your loving Son

Banishing the gloom of lonely lives.

May Your great love flood their lives,

Only to flow over and channel Your grace

To those they touch.

May they continue to draw closer to You, Lord,

Growing more strong and fruitful

As their roots sink down in You,

In You as their one foundation.

May their love grow like the tree

Planted beside the water,

Fuller, stronger and more beautiful

Day by day.
