Don’t be caught without a wedding dress!

In Matthew 22:1-14, our Bible reading passage for today, we read a parable about a wedding feast. There are many things we can glean from this parable, but I was struck with the last few verses.

So the wedding hall was filled with guests.  “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment.  And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.  Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’  For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Throughout the Bible, we find instances where God clothes us in beautiful garments, though we are not worthy.

In Genesis 3,  Adam and Eve were the first sinners to stand before God, attempting to hide their humiliation, guilt, and shame by grabbing a few fig leaves to provide covering. But God “made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.” Adam and Eve threw together as a covering whatever was handy at the moment. What they chose to cover themselves with physically was totally inadequate as a spiritual covering. An animal had to die to provide their garment of skin and Hebrews 9 states “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

Isaiah 64:6, we read that all of our own righteousness is as filthy rags. Only God can cleanse us from sin and cause us to be truly blameless, or righteous. The Lord says in Zechariah 3:4, “See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will clothe you with festal robes.”

In Isaiah 61:10 there is a reference to the robe of righteousness: “I will rejoice greatly in the Lord; My soul will exult in my God, for He has clothed me with garments of salvation; He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” Wow, what a picture of us, the redeemed, arrayed in the splendor of God’s holiness!

Back to the parable:  Are you someone who has sneaked into the wedding, pretending to be something you are not?  Have you thrown together a wedding outfit that will be exposed? The king will not be fooled. There is no alternate plan.  Don’t be caught speechless.  You must “Say Yes to HIS Dress,” HIS robes of righteousness and the garments of salvation!
