If the Son sets you free…

Are you a slave? You are if you can’t seem to break free from harmful emotions or sinful patterns in your life. Jesus said, “Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34, ESV) .

In another passage for today, Peter says, “For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved” (2 Peter 2:19).

You’re enslaved if there is some consuming area of your life that you can’t stop thinking about—like food, an activity, or your appearance

  • Maybe you are a slave to your past, and you don’t feel that God can use you.
  • Maybe you are a slave to your body image and can’t enjoy food in the way God intended.
  • Maybe you are a slave who spends hour after hour engrossed in the Internet or text messaging and are not free to be in solitude.
  • Maybe you are a slave  to works, to a  performance-based faith, and you are not free to enjoy God.
  • Maybe you are a slave to worry, fear, anger, depression, or self-pity.

You are not alone.  There is hope.  In John 8 (where we are reading this week):

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
