This is what has happened to those in whom we hoped?

Today we read Isaiah 17-20, more chapters of woe pronounced against nations, all of which are under the  sovereign rule of God.  As the Creator of the universe, the God of Isaiah and Israel is not limited to Israel. He holds all nations accountable for their actions. We also see a reminder here to place our faith, trust and hope in God alone and not nations, armies. (or political parties?)

Then they shall be dismayed and ashamed because of Cush their hope and of Egypt their boast. And the inhabitants of this coastland will say in that day, ‘Behold, this is what has happened to those in whom we hoped and to whom we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria! And we, how shall we escape?’”
(Isaiah 20:5-6 ESV)

Indeed, how can we escape if our hope in NOT in God?  People fail us.  Governments fail us. Families fail us.  God will NEVER fail and is completely trustworthy!  Our reading from Proverbs 21 today highlights our need to trust in God rather than horses or chariots.

The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but the victory belongs to the Lord.
  —Proverbs 21:31
