Crying out and trusting in God

And when they prevailed over them, the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hands, for they cried out to God in the battle, and he granted their urgent plea because they trusted in him. They carried off their livestock: 50,000 of their camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 men alive. For many fell, because the war was of God. And they lived in their place until the exile. —1 Chronicles 5:20

After spending 6 months of reading in the Psalms, where repeatedly we read about “crying out to God”, we come to yet another example of the people of Israel crying out to God, and God grants them their urgent plea. Why?

2 reasons are given in our passage for today:

  1. Because the people trusted in God
  2. Because the war was of God

Do you see the connection?  God is sovereign over all the events of history, including wars. This war was “of God.” And knowing the character of God, that He is  Sovereign, All-powerful, All-knowing, All-wise, All-good, All-loving, All-righteous and infinitely MORE, we can TRUST in whatever He ordains to come to pass…that it is ultimately for our good and His glory.  Indeed, as Romans 8:28-29 says-  And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
