As we move into chapter 8 of 2 Chronicles we are see Solomon begin a pursuit of trying to find joy, a joy which apparently is not based in the Lord. Solomon started out well, asking God to give him wisdom to lead the people, but then he does not apply that wisdom to his own life. Solomon spent 7 years in the building of the temple, and another 13 years in the building of his own house and accumulating wealth and wives. He gets himself involved with all kinds of things that are moving him away from the Lord. That cost him dearly.
Solomon thought this would bring him joy, but in Ecclesiastes 2:11 he said, “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.”
Real joy can only be found in God.
