do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?

In the passage for today, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Paul writes:

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Some of the Corinthian believers may have personally identified with one or more of the sins on the list Paul just shared. Some of you may identify. Some of you may have participated in some of these sinful attitudes and activities, but have now experienced new birth in Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit, have been able to turn from your old ways.

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

But emphasizes the strong contrast between their past life of sin and their present position in Christ.

Washed = purified, cleansed

Sanctified = set apart as belonging to God and devoted to the service of God

Justified = declared righteous in the sight of God

When we have been washed, sanctified, and justified – we should not continually live in immorality. We should be grieved over sin. If instead we rationalize that what God calls sin is not really sin, and we try to justify our sinful behavior, we are demonstrating that our present life of sin is no different from our past. “do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?
